Official Rules
This competition will comply with the official 2024 NYYL rules.
Music
Competitors will select music to accompany their routines. A music upload will become available on this website before the competition, and all competitors must upload music.
A player is entitled to select whatever music they’d like as long as it is deemed appropriate for all audiences. Failure to select appropriate music will result in disqualification. See the official 2024 NYYL rules for more details about what is deemed inappropriate.
Divisions
1A Championship division
The 1A championship division is open to all ages and skill levels, and is restricted to the 1A style of play. It will consist of a preliminary 1 minute freestyle round, and the top placing competitors from the preliminary round will advance to the 2 minute finals. The number of finalists will depend on the number of registered competitors. We expect 10 to 20 competitors will advance to the final round.
X-Division
The X division will consist of the 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A styles of play. See the 2024 NYYL ruleset for definitions of 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A, and the score multipliers for each division.
Futures division:
The futures division is intended for newer competitors, those who are competing at a yo-yo competition for the first time, or those who are just looking for more experience on the stage. The futures division will be broken into age categories:
- 12 and under
- 13 and up
The futures division will follow the judging guidelines of the Sport Division section of the 2024 NYYL ruleset (e.g. freestyles will have a 1 minute duration and there will be only one round). Winners from the Futures Division will be awarded prizes from our sponsors.
The Futures division is designed to be a welcoming and supportive environment for new competitors. We believe that, regardless of the outcome in the competition results, participating in the Futures division is a valuable and enriching experience. No matter your skill level or how long you’ve been yo-yoing, we encourage newer players to take the stage!
Competing in multiple divisions
- Players cannot compete in both the Futures division and the 1A championship division.
- Players can compete simultaneously in the 1A Championship and X Division, or the Futures and X Division.
- Players cannot have multiple entries in any single division (i.e. players cannot have multiple entries in the X Division with different styles of play).
Seeding
The California State Yo-Yo Championships are not a regional competition, and thus it will not seed into the 2025 US National Yo-Yo Championships.
Venue
It is important to note that the Chico City Plaza is an outdoor venue. This location is not known for being particularly windy, however we note that the wind can be an uncontrollable factor which can interfere with slack tricks. If this is a concern for you, see videos from previous years to get a feel for the conditions.
